1 Day Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary: This 1 day Ziwa rhino Sanctuary tour will begin and end in Kampala Uganda’s capital and its largest city, it will take you to Ziwa Rhino sanctuary which is a drive about just 176 km from Kampala on the Kampala – Gulu highway. The sanctuary is sited on 70 square kilometers of land, which was previously a private farm.  The Ziwa rhino sanctuary is an en route to Murchison falls national park and many visitors to the park first make en-route drive to this powerful sanctuary and stand a chance to trek the black and white rhinos inhabited here and many visit it as part of an itinerary to the Murchison falls national park.

Detailed itinerary for Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary tour

Early in the morning after breakfast, our safari guide will meet you and drive you at Northern part of Uganda. You will leave Kampala at 7 am. The drive takes about 3 hour drive from Kampala Uganda’s capital to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.  The target here is to get to Ziwa before it is too hot which often means the Rhinos choose resting instead of feeding.  The drive will take you via the Luwero triangle passing through the countryside homesteads and various roadside vegetable and fruit markets all these offers fantastic drive and less tiresome drive to the sanctuary.

About Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Ziwa rhino sanctuary is the only place in Uganda for trekking the wild rhinos in their natural setting. You can see the rest from the Uganda wildlife education center (zoo) which is in Entebbe. Upon your arrival at the sanctuary, you will get a briefing from the ranger guide about the dos and don’ts while with the rhinos. It is advisable to follow the ranger instructions once you meet the rhinos because they can be aggressive if they sense a need to defend themselves.

The starting point is a bit far from the briefing point so if you are not physically fit you may need to be driven closer to their location before you start to reduce on the distance. Once you meet them, you will receive the necessary information from the ranger about their behaviors and how they ought to behave while you trek.

You are only allowed a maximum of one hour in their presence, the process of searching for these big giants, you may come across many other several species of animals including the Water bucks, Bush bucks, Kobs, Leopard (rarely), duikers and some bird species. After this wonderful experience, you will retire back to Kampala.
