Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and Transfer to Virunga National Park
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your professional tour guide, marking the beginning of your exciting 3-day Congo Gorilla Safari. After a short briefing about your trip—covering the itinerary, expectations, and essential travel guidelines—you’ll begin your journey toward Virunga National Park.
Before leaving Kigali, you have the option to enjoy a packed lunch from your hotel or a local restaurant. Depending on your arrival time, you may take a brief city tour of Kigali, visiting significant historical and cultural landmarks. These may include the Kandt House Museum, the Kigali Genocide Memorial, and vibrant local craft markets where you can purchase handmade souvenirs.
From Kigali, you’ll embark on a scenic drive through the Rwandan countryside en route to the Goma border post, which separates Rwanda from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Along the way, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of rolling hills, rural landscapes, and Lake Kivu. Lunch will be provided en route.
Upon arrival at the border, you’ll complete immigration formalities and be officially handed over to the Virunga National Park authorities. Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Virunga National Park
Today marks the highlight of your safari—an unforgettable gorilla trekking experience in the legendary Virunga National Park. Wake up early and enjoy a hearty breakfast at your lodge before being transferred to the park headquarters for a mandatory pre-trek briefing.
The briefing starts promptly at 8:00 AM, during which park rangers will provide essential information, including safety guidelines, gorilla behavior, and the dos and don’ts of trekking. You will then be assigned to one of the habituated gorilla families, with a maximum of eight visitors per group to ensure minimal disruption to the gorillas and a more intimate experience.
After the briefing, you’ll be led into the dense tropical forest by experienced ranger guides and trackers. The trek can range from moderate to strenuous, depending on the location of the gorilla family, as these magnificent primates move freely within the forest. A reasonable level of physical fitness is helpful, and sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended. Along the way, enjoy the natural beauty of the park, including sightings of other wildlife and a variety of bird species.
Once you find your assigned gorilla family, you’ll spend a magical one hour observing them in their natural habitat. Watch them go about their daily lives—feeding, playing, grooming, and interacting with one another. You are encouraged to take photos (without flash) and simply savor the rare privilege of being in the presence of these gentle giants.
After your time with the gorillas, return to the starting point where your guide will be waiting to transfer you back to your lodge for a well-deserved rest and lunch. In the late afternoon, you may choose to relax at the lodge or take an optional visit to the Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage Center, the only facility of its kind that cares for orphaned mountain gorillas, offering insight into conservation efforts in the region.
